    Publication: Augusta Vindelicorum [Augsburg], Joannis Caspari Bencard, 1695. First and only edition in Latin (translated by Matthias Honcamp).

    Physical description: Folio (37 x 24 cm). Volume I: 25 sheets (including front and title page), 342 pages, 22 sheets (index). Volume II: 14 sheets (including title page), 249 pages, 14 sheets (index). 42 magnificent engravings placed between text allegorical to the human figure, copper engravings, within cartouches, of great detail and quality. Period parchment binding with label on the spine.

    Notes: A wise work, illustrated with magnificent copper engravings, and where the double nature of man, spiritual and material, is explored in depth. Its relations with mysticism, symbology, hieroglyphics and the mysteries of the occult. We find herbal signatures and their astrological correspondence for the treatment of diseases of all parts of the human body. It does not forget magic or alchemy, and reveals wonderful secrets, such as the hidden properties of saliva, urine, sperm, and excrement, with the help of which surprising results can be obtained. The author, who frequented alchemists a lot, also describes a profusion of rare and precious preparations and formulas. It is a unique work of its kind (Caillet 9948).

    Author's Biography: Ottavio Scarlatini (1623-1699), born in Bologna, was abbot of Canonici Regolari Lateranensi in 1639, and priest of the church of Maggiore di Castel S. Pietro in 1667.

    Conservation: Good condition. Light signs of oxidation and missing frontispiece. Previous owner's stamp on cover. Completely revised.
