Binding: Beautiful Fanfare binding attributed to the Clovis Eve workshop, presumably for Margaret of Valois. Heavily decorated with gilded ironwork with ornamental motifs, fleur-de-lis, fillets, 4 daisies in bloom and the typical olive leaves and Bourbon lilies, characteristic of the Clovis Eve workshop. Spine richly decorated with fleur-de-lis and floral decoration.

Notes: The style known as Fanfare has its origins in France from the mid-16th century to the beginning of the 17th century, during the reign of Henry III, and represents a departure from Renaissance designs. The promoters of this style were the French bookbinders Nicolas Eve and his son Clovis. The surface of the cover is decorated with geometric lines, such as fretworks joined together by double or triple threads, a central oval with floral ornamentation, olive trees, fleur-de-lis, Bourbon lilies, etc.

Condition: Good. Minor wear on the binding and oxidized gold trim. Completely revised.
