    Technique: Etching, burnished aquatint, drypoint and burin. Numbered in the upper right corner with 1. Title in plate in the lower central part.

    Size: 415 x 285 mm [paper], 215 x 155 mm [plate].

    Description: The first of the Los Caprichos prints was devised by Goya as a frontispiece for the collection.

    Goya is about fifty years old in this image and is portraying himself in profile, with a serene expression, a grim gesture and a sharp gaze that is in keeping with the satirical gesture noted in the Ayala manuscript and in the Biblioteca Nacional manuscript. The character of this engraving is the fine observer who will unfold before our eyes the social and political panorama of his time from the perspective of sarcasm and irony.

    Conservation: Good impression.

    Other information: The first edition printed in 1799. Goya called them prints “whimsical matters that lent themselves to present things in ridicule, to fustigate prejudices, impostures and hypocrisies consecrated by time” and they were announced as “Collection of prints of whimsical matters, invented and engraved with etching by Don Francisco de Goya” endowed with a great critical charge for fear of the Inquisition.
