Willem Janszoon Blaeu (Uitgeest or Alkmaar, 1571 - Amsterdam, October 21, 1638) was a Dutch cartographer and atlas publisher.

He had two sons, Joan Blaeu and Cornelius Blaeu, who continued their father's business of editing and publishing maps after his death in 1638.

This map, an edition by Willem Blaeu based on the work of Jodocus Hondius II, depicts the Straits of Magellan and Le Maire, Tierra del Fuego, and the southern tip of Patagonia. It is one of the first atlas maps available of this region, preceded only by Hondius's 1606 map. Blaeu's edition stands out for its significant revisions and improvements, offering a more precise and detailed view of these crucial maritime routes.
