    Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) was a Spanish painter, sculptor and art theorist, one of the most prominent figures of 20th century art.

    Born in Barcelona, Tàpies began studying law, but soon abandoned his studies to devote himself entirely to art. Although he initially explored Surrealism, his work quickly evolved into Informalism and Matter Art in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

    His style was characterized by the use of non-traditional materials, such as sand, crushed marble, earth and dust, mixed with pigments and binders to create dense, rough textures. His compositions often incorporated signs, symbols (such as the cross, the letter “A” or “T”), and graphics that could have multiple interpretations, from the mystical and spiritual to the political and social.

    Tàpies achieved international recognition.
