    Description: “One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji” is a series of ukiyo-e woodcuts by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. The set comprises 102 woodblock prints issued in three separate volumes: the first in 1834, the second in 1835, and the final installment in 1849. Later impressions were taken from the original blocks; the present example dates from 1860–1870 and was published in Nagoya by Eirakuya Tōshirō. It is among Hokusai’s most representative works, a landscape collection in which text is restricted to the title of each scene. With this project the artist sought to expand upon his earlier “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,” offering the sacred mountain from a far wider range of vantage points.

    Physical description: Quarto (23 × 16 cm). 50 woodcut plates: 17 double-page and 16 single-page.

    Technique: Woodblock printing; the image is produced from carved wooden blocks.

    Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was renowned for his brilliant personality, prodigious output, and dedication to large-scale publishing ventures. In addition to his famous “Manga,” his most celebrated works include “One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji,” a fascinating repertoire of landscapes centered on the sacred volcano. Hokusai had already achieved success with this theme in his color-print series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,” yet his imagination and powers of observation demanded a more extensive format to display his full talent. In his eighties, Hokusai completed over one hundred compositions in this ambitious undertaking.
