Subject: Original print from the first half of the twentieth century. Los Caprichos – Francisco de Goya.
Publication: Madrid, Real Calcografía, 1918–1928. Tenth edition.
Technique: Etching and burnished aquatint. Bevelled. Black and white with sepia tones on laid paper that seeks to match the first edition. José Guarro paper, watermarked with the Portrait of Goya wearing a hat. Numbered 45 in the upper right corner. Title engraved on the plate along the lower edge.
Dimensions: 21 × 14.5 cm (plate mark), 36 × 26 cm (sheet), 38 × 32 cm (passe-partout).
Artistic analysis: A group of three witches or procuresses rest while taking snuff, a preparation made from tobacco that, once scented, was consumed nasally. They are seated on the ground, dressed in large tunics that cover their heads—in the case of the two in the foreground. Their wizened, aged faces have deformed, almost caricatured features, and their bony hands end in long nails. In the background we see two bats taking flight, and in the foreground Goya has placed a basket crammed with children’s bodies. In this print Goya addresses the ignorance of the people and the persistence of superstitious beliefs still widespread in those years. The print characterizes the Furies: Tisiphone by her masculine attire and features, all of them by their ugliness, and the bats that mark them as daughters of the night.
Condition: Good impression. Light oxidation marks. This edition is very well printed; the plates were cleaned and it is the finest after the fourth.
