Dimensions: 47.5 x 35.5 cm [image], 76 x 63 cm [passepartout].
Visual Description: The Baby Jesus appears in the middle, with Saint Joseph and the Virgin on the left and the shepherds on the right. Engraved by Goltzius and belongs to the series 'The Life of the Virgin'. Latin verses in the lower part: "Coeli opifex, rerum dominus (...) F. Estius".
Observations: The scene is based on a painting by Jacopo Bassano representing the 'Angel's Greeting to the Shepherds'. Carel Van Mander recounts that Bassano's painting was owned by Jan Ycket of Amsterdam around 1604. The painting was also engraved by Jan Sadeler.
Condition: Perfect state. Wide margins. Central fold of factitious volume.
Provenance: Engraving from the art collection of Gaspar de Haro y Guzmán, 7th Marquis of Carpio and Eliche (1629 - 1687), a Spanish noble, diplomat, and politician. He was the son of the collector Luis de Haro, from whom he inherited a large repertoire of paintings, which he progressively expanded with high-quality works.
