Subject: Antique Engraving. Madrid. Optical View.
Publication: Paris, Chez Chereau, c.1780.
Measurements: 25.5 x 41 cm.
Technique: Copperplate engraving.
Notes: Exquisite 18th-century optical view, hand-colored at the time. This is an original copperplate engraving on laid paper, illuminated with watercolor. Published by Jacques Chéreau in Paris around 1780, it depicts an impressive view of the former Royal Palace of Madrid (Royal Alcazar of Madrid destroyed in 1734 by a fire).
During the 18th century, cities like Paris, London, Augsburg, and Bassano became centers of production for these fascinating optical views. These works could be appreciated in various ways: directly, through a zograscope (a device with a lens that enlarged the image and enhanced the perspective), or inside optical boxes, where the viewer observed through a lens.
This form of entertainment was very popular in the salons of the bourgeoisie and nobility, as well as in rural areas, thanks to itinerant vendors who carried them.
Optical views are considered an important antecedent of pre-cinema, as they played with visual perception and the illusion of depth.
Conservation: Very good condition, vivid colors. Short margins.
